  • Strategic Business Incubation for Knowledge Acquisition and Technology  Commercialization in Learning Institutions in Maseno University By Geoffrey Andaman and Samwel Onyango Obalah

Abstract

This qualitative action research explores integration of Strategic Business Incubation (SBI) at Maseno University, Kenya.

Researchers and Scholars agree that the current and future social, economic and environmental challenges facing African countries are intertwined and mutually reinforcing. It is therefore true that planning with competency and continuous development of trainees ideas in mind may have profound effects on future entrepreneurial successes and societal welfare in Africa.

Researchers have encouraged higher learning institutions to integrate strategic business incubation into their learning programs to leverage the performance of potential entrepreneurs and enterprises in their initial stages of development. It is therefore critical to understand the performance implication of Strategic Business Incubation (SBI) on incubates. The primary objective was to analyze how Maseno University integrates SBI strategy in its learning programs, how this enhances entrepreneurial best practices among potential student entrepreneurs within and outside the institution.

The authors conducted the study in Kisumu County. The incubator of focus “Maseno University Incubator” houses both continuing and alumni students with startup ventures. To fulfill the research objectives, the study employed a survey design for enhanced generalization of findings. The study population comprised of all enterprises and entrepreneurs incubated in the Maseno University Incubation Centre. This was about 140 by the year 2014.

The researchers employed both primary and secondary data in this study. The primary data came from incubated firms and incubator managers of Maseno University while secondary data came from documents and records that the incubator managers kept. They collected data through standard questionnaires and key informant interviews respectively.

The authors used SPSS data analysis software for data processing and presentation. The result of this study will help TVET institutions redesign their learning strategies and will provide a firm foundation for policy formulation on Competency Based Training. It will also help these institutions to transition new entrepreneurial ideas from institutions to the market place, providing synergy into the economic growth of the nation.

  • Leveraging the Competitive Potentials of the Youth Through Business Incubation Programs By Charles Asaka Nyangara, Samwel Obalah, Joyce Nyanjom

Abstract

Kenya is currently searching for an employment generation strategy to supplement the large firms. Business Incubation Programs (BIPs) have emerged to be an effective mechanism and strategy to enhance the formation, development, growth, and survival rate of new and existing start up firms.

Research indicates that well managed business incubators can boost the survival rate of start-up businesses up to 80 – 90% as compared to new businesses under normal circumstances. Despite this, Technical, Industrial and Vocational Educational Training (TVET) institutions in Kenya in Kenya are yet to recognize BIPs.

This study explored the question of how feasible and relevant the concept of BI was to TVET institutions in Kenya with specific reference to The Kisumu National Polytechnic. The study adopted a case-study design. The researchers used Semi-structured interview schedules to obtain information from officers of the management team and two incubates.

The analyzed data revealed that Kisumu Polytechnic had the required technical staff to oversee, mentor and train the students enrolling into the BI program. However, the college lacked the necessary funds to implement an effective BI program. The study concludes that Bus can function on a sustainable basis at Kisumu Polytechnic and serve to create employment opportunities for the youth.
