ICT Services

The Information Communication and Technology (ICT) department is one of the core, non-academic departments of The Kisumu National Polytechnic.

The current Principal Mrs. Joyce Nyanjom together with the management setup the department in January 2012. The management hived it off from the Mathematics/Computer Department after they decided that the latter needed to concentrate on its core mandate of teaching.

The department provides ICT support to the entire institutions while working closely with the Computers and Mathematics Department to facilitate the latter’s academic programs. It advises the entire institution on how to integrate emerging ICT Technologies in College Management and Curriculum delivery with operations.

Practically, it provides computer network services; web applications services; software development; telephone exchange systems; development and maintenance of management information systems to help in meeting the academic and administrative needs of the Polytechnic.

The management seconded two lecturers to the ICT Services department and employed five support staff members to constitute the department.

To build a scholarly commitment in pursuit of excellence and innovation in ICT training and creative developments of new technologies in our graduates that will help meet and solve ICT Challenges in society.

ICT Functions

The ICT Services department is charged with a number of responsibilities necessary in ensuring smooth running of varies activities within the polytechnic.

Functions and Responsibilities

  • Provision of quality ICT Services to the Polytechnic
  • Management, control and maintenance of ICT in the Polytechnic.
  • Advising Polytechnic Authorities on all ICT matters.
  • Formulation of ICT policy for the Polytechnic.
  • Interpretation of ICT Policies and related matters for the Polytechnic Systems Administration.
  • ICT End-user Support and Training.
  • Planning, Development, Activation and maintenance of Information Systems Projects.

Our Services

The department provides a number of services to the Students, Staff, Administration and other stakeholders. These services include:

  • Network Administration Services

The Network Administrator provides these services and is responsible for designing and planning the network, setting it up, maintaining it and expanding it according to need.

  • Management Information Systems Services

These services include; maintaining the system, verifying that peripherals are working properly, repair hardware whenever there’s a failure, monitor system performance and create a backup and recovery policy. These services fall under the systems administrator

  • Software Development Services

Software development services includes, creating, developing and producing new computer software applications. This process involves reviewing the current system, presenting ideas, analyzing, producing specifications, coding and testing, implementing and maintaining the new system. This service falls under the software developer/ computer programmer.

  • Web Administration Services

His main duty is managing and maintaining the polytechnic website. This involves; designing and developing the website; administering the website; making sure all the web servers, hardware, and software are working properly; managing email and controlling information flow through the website.

  • User Support Services

The user support section provides general User Support Services such as handling user requests, diagnosis, troubleshooting and solving the problems by administering first level support to the users. This works by receiving, attending and resolving user requests related problems.

  • Telephone Exchange Services

The telephone exchange service involves duties such as answering calls, taking message and assisting customers over the phone. The telephone operator also ensures all departments have operational phone extensions.

  • To offer suitable approved and diversified curriculum in accordance to guidelines issued from the Polytechnic Academic Board.
  • To identify, acquire and install relevant ICT resources and implement their transfer to the polytechnic.
  • To manage operations and maintenance of ICT resources.
  • To manage database information systems.
  • Train end-users on computer literacy and offer them computing support.
  • To offer technical advice and consultancy on acquisition of ICT resources.
  • Planning, implementation and development of ICT infrastructure.

Due to its role within the polytechnic environment, ICT is central to the student’s needs and invites them and their parents to undertake the following:

  • Participate in all activities during open days
  • Take time to come and know what goes on within the college departments and sections
  • Sponsor research activities aimed at benefiting the larger community

Give feedback and some suggestions on what we should improve on or even include in our list of activities/functions and how to make this happen.

Achievements

Among the success stories that the ICT department has implemented in the past are:

  • Deployment of the Biometric System for students’ registration (Finger Print System)
  • Installation of a fiber-optic network covering 80% of the institution’s buildings
  • Installation of an ERP i.e. COLEMIS which covers Students Registration, Hostels, Exams Processing, Collection of Fees, Produce Exam Results, Allocate Rooms and Beds for boarding students
  • Deployment of the Pepea System for pay as you eat system for students
  • Installation of a VoIP telephone system to ease communication inside the institution and with external stakeholders

Some of our ongoing projects include:

  • Setting up of two more computer labs with AC units (Mechanical and the Smart classroom)
  • Development of an e-voting system in conjunction with Eyoo Solutions to run student and union elections
  • Development of a time-tabling system for all academic departments in conjunction with FelSoft Systems Ltd (currently ongoing)
  • Ongoing polytechnic website upgrade in conjunction with Elrond Enterprises Consultants
  • Activating the Smart Classroom Laboratory

In future, we hope to undertake the following projects:

  • Installation of CCTV system
  • Upgrade of the WiFi connectivity system
  • Extencion of the fibre-optic backbone network to the new Library complex and Lecture theatre
  • Set up a standard ICT centre office plus data centre
  • Introduction of more online services

Smart Classroom

The Smart Classroom consists of a unique concept integrating ICT based learning with traditional hands-on education, to create a futuristic classroom. The practical demo and training units in the classroom link to a Digital Learning Resources Library that enables students to design, explore, and investigate.

The Smart Classroom concept consists of two classrooms:

In the lecturer demonstration room, teachers have access to 1000 interactive presentations, demonstrations, exercises, tests, specific teacher and student materials covering vocational, engineering and life skills subjects. The state-of-the-art ICT laboratory assists exploration and investigation through on-screen simulations and virtual experiments for different vocational and engineering topics.

In the students’ demonstration-room, a rich ICT environment with a focus on improving new technologies for TVET exists.  Learners are able to experiment with new technologies by exploration, simulations and practical exercises.

LJ Create provides educational resources for teaching Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and related subjects. Devotra (acronym for Development of Vocational Education and Training) focuses on engineering projects in developing countries and upcoming markets.
