Business Incubator

Apart from the education and training at the institution, the department has also written several project proposals with the recently launched business incubator that specializes in garment making being an endeavor that became reality. Mr. Agrippa Onguka and his team spearheaded these efforts from conception to fruition.

Inaugurated on March 17, 2016 the Garment Making Incubator centre is located within the Polytechnic and got funding from COMESA and the European Union to a tune of about Ksh18 million.

It brings together SMEs dealing in garment making, the private sector that supports garment making businesses and the government at the County and National levels. They operate a triple helix model that creates a policy framework with joint vision and action.

The business incubator will provide a range of support services including:

  • Business office premises.
  • Short training programs in garment making
  • Business planning and development
  • Legal services
  • Financial sourcing
  • Business managerial support
  • Marketing support

The centre will outsource some of the services mentioned above from relevant institutions that will in essence become partners.

Members’ benefits include;

  • expanded networks for international markets
  • shared resources
  • acquired specialized skills in garment making
  • networking within the triple helix structure
  • innovation stimulation
  • increased competitiveness and
  • Improved product quality.

Some of the modern equipment available at the incubator includes machines for embroidery, digital designing, cutting and sawing, among many other automated operations that modern garment operators require to impact contemporary markets.

The steering committee is in the process of setting up the structures required to operationalise the facility. These include registering a Limited Liability Company and appointment of directors and a management team including signatories to a bank account. Even as the launch date approaches, already a team from Malawi visited the Polytechnic on July 4, 2016, for a benchmarking exercise on the Garment Making Business Incubator.
